The only thing that keeps the book from being a 5/5 for me is that it occasionally drifts into some more religious teaching aspects, which I don’t take issue with as author Robert Turner is a pastor. My concern is that it feels like he’s occasionally putting the control of these methods in the hands of “god.” While at its core, that doesn’t harm, I feel it lessens the impact of some of his points.

Directed by Taylor Taglianetti (shout out to working on the casting of one of my favorite films, SHIVA BABY,) this film breaks away from conventional storytelling of what you would expect in a documentary to instead shine a spotlight on Dr. Howard Tucker’s incredible journey as both a medical pioneer and a long fulfilled life, all through the lens of his enriching relationship with his grandson. Taglianetti mixes professional accomplishments with personal stories, creating a narrative that's as enriching as it is entertaining.

A FORGOTTEN MAN explores Switzerland’s untold story during World War II and offers more than just a history lesson. Directed with a keen eye for detail by Laurent Nègre, it spotlights the moral dilemmas and internal struggles that plagued individuals in the aftermath of war. Through Michael Neuenschwander's portrayal of Heinrich Zwygart, we’re treated to a riveting exploration of a man torn between duty and conscience, wrapped in a visually striking black-and-white palette that adds depth and nuance to every scene.

CODE RED: DIARIES OF MADNESS journeys into the story of Cristy "Code Red" Nickel, capturing her leap back into competitive bodybuilding after years as a renowned nutritionist and entrepreneur. Under the direction of Vlad Yudin, this documentary aims to thread the needle, weaving Nickel's rigorous commitment to her physical renaissance with her professional zeal. Yet, as it marches towards depicting Nickel's storied return to the limelight, the film stumbles, missing beats that could have deepened the exploration of Nickel's drive and passion. My issues with the film are twofold. First, the intro narration feels like a very unrealistic approach to life. I always find it uncomfortable when people say, “Anyone can become rich; all they have to do is try.” That, coupled with most of the film feeling like an infomercial for Nickel’s nutrition program, is off-putting. I will admit that the last third of the film focused on documentary-style filmmaking, and her journey was a saving grace.

LOST ANGEL: THE GENIUS OF JUDEE SILL is what it would have to feel like to unearth a long-lost diary, where each page reveals the echoes of Judee Sill's life, playing out in a melody of highs and lows. Directed by Andy Brown and Brian Lindstrom, this exploration into Sill's life is less a straightforward documentary and more a journey through the soul of an artist who radiated a profound lyrical and melodic brilliance despite being cloaked in the shadows of obscurity. A name that you may not be familiar with but whom everyone should know.

If you’re unfamiliar with Jessica Hausner, you will be shortly. I’ve now watched four of her films, and I would argue that she may be one of my new favorite directors! In this film, she takes us on a journey to a remote Austrian hotel where the line between the real and the imagined becomes increasingly blurred. In this movie, Hausner crafts a narrative that’s as much about the spaces between the lines as it is about the words themselves. This isn’t your typical scream-fest; instead, it's a cerebral game that plays out in the viewer's mind, encouraging a deep dive into the nature of fear and the power of imagination. Through minimalistic storytelling and psychological complexity, Hausner invites the audience into a world where the conventional horror elements aren’t what we get. Instead, they’re replaced by an atmosphere ripe with tension and uncertainty.

Jennifer MacArthur crafts a narrative that's as rich and fertile as the soils these families tend. Through her lens, we're introduced to the unsung heroes of sustainable forestry, who combat climate change and weave their deep-seated family values into the fabric of their environmental endeavors. I was blown away by how many topics and threads were successfully explored in this film. It wasn’t just about one thing but a long list of essential issues combined to form the film's core.
