Olympia High School Weekly Sports Recap

The softball team was keeping busy this week. They began at Pontiac on Tuesday, coming away with a 2-0 hard-fought win. Shelby Finchum had a great fake throw to turn into a double play, keeping the Indians scoreless. Danika Frazier followed this with a 2-run home run. The JV team then picked up a 7-1 victory. On Thursday, the girls had a home game against rival Central Catholic. They won 10-0, scoring all 10 runs in the last inning. A double by Kat Springer started the rally by scoring Jordyn Turner. Other highlights include Shelby Finchum hitting a grand slam and a 2-run homer by Julia Winterland. On the defensive side, Danika Frazier threw a 2-hitter while striking out 10. JV softball followed with a 6-5 win. Saturday was a big tournament at Mt. Zion with at least 3 varsity softball games for the Spartans!

The baseball team had a very similar week in terms of games and opponents. The varsity team lost a conference game on Tuesday to Pontiac with a score of 5-6. But, then they came back with a conference win of 8-7 against Central Catholic on Thursday. Saturday was a tournament day at Beardstown for the varsity boys. The JV team also played a doubleheader at East Peoria on Saturday. Finally, freshman baseball had one game at GCMS this week. 

Girls’ soccer began with an away game at St. Thomas More on Tuesday, losing 0-5. Thursday night was a home game against Monticello with the Spartans losing 1-0. The last game of the week was also home vs East Peoria. After a long night of fighting the wind, Olympia lost 1-2.

The girls and boys track team had their last home meet and senior night on Tuesday! This was the 42nd Annual Olympia Co-Ed Relays. The Spartans had an outstanding night and earned the 2nd place trophy, falling to state-ranked team, U-High. Almost all of the Spartan athletes earned an individual medal or ribbon too! First place finishers were the JV boys 4x200m relay, JV boys 4x400m relay, combined boys and girls 4x110 shuttle hurdles, combined boys and girls high jump team, and the girls 4x800m relay. On Saturday, they were able to travel to the Rocket Invitational at Rochester High School. Congratulations to the OHS track team!
