OHS Weekly Sports Recap

This week has been a rough week for Olympia High School sports. Many students are sick, injured, or quarantined so they are unable to play. Thus, the week was much lighter with sports and activities going on.

The wrestling team participated in a meet at Farmington with Eureka on Tuesday. Then, the coaches and some team members had a Covid outbreak. Thus, every meet for the next few days was canceled. There were even supposed to be matches on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, but Olympia wrestling is unable to field a team for at least another week.

The boys’ basketball game on Tuesday was also canceled due to issues with the opposing team of Fieldcrest. This game will be postponed to a later date for JV and varsity. The freshman and JV teams did play their games at El Paso Gridley on Monday night. Saturday afternoon, the JV and varsity boys traveled to Tremont for another competition.

Girls’ basketball was able to participate in all their scheduled games this week. Monday was an away game at Illinois Valley Central. At halftime, the Olympia JV was losing by a lot, but then they came out strong and eventually took the lead. The Spartans ended up winning the game after a rough start. The varsity team handled IVC the whole game and won by about 15 points. A varsity starter, Hannah Cleveland, tore her meniscus at the game on Monday and is out to have another surgery on her knee. Wednesday the freshman had a home basketball game in the middle school gym. They were supposed to play Williamsville but it got changed to Limestone. Olympia lost with a final score of 39-46. Thursday was a set of home games for JV and varsity girls. These were the first conference games of the season for Olympia against Tolono Unity. The JV team lost 15-23. They were missing one of their leading scorers, Mia Boudemen, from a sprained ankle. Then, the varsity team had a lead of 13 points going into halftime. Tolono came out with a strong defense, though, in the second half which held the Spartans to only scoring 5 points. Tolono Unity ended up winning 38-42. Saturday morning freshman girls’ basketball hosted St. Joseph-Ogden. This game was another win with a score of 31-9. Earlier in the season, the Olympia freshman team beat St. Joseph-Ogden.
