Olympia High School Weekly Sports Recap

To start off the week, girls’ basketball had a home game against Heyworth. JV had a nice win of 37-17. The varsity also won 57-32. Leading scorers were Taylor Nowaskie with 23 points and Hannah Cleveland with 17 points. Wednesday night, the freshman team traveled to St. Joseph-Ogden and came out with a win. Thursday was an away game at Tremont. Since this game was much closer in distance, the Spartans had a fan section of students. Again, the JV team won by a lot. The varsity girls also lead throughout the whole game and came away with a 66-54 win. This advances the team to eight wins and only two losses. They begin conference play with home games on both Monday and Thursday of this coming week. On Saturday morning, the freshman girls played a home game against Normal Community and lost 29-52.

Boys’ basketball had their first set of home games Tuesday vs Deer Creek-Mackinaw. The theme was Red-Out Roundup with a focus on the donation drive for the homeless through the Salvation Army, hosted by Andrew Fishman. This was also the dance team’s first performance at an Olympia event this year. The dance and the cheer teams both continue to impress the fans in the stands! The JV boys lost 33-45 and varsity lost 39-45. In the varsity game, the boys came back from a big deficit to make the game very close within the last minutes but couldn’t pull through with the victory. Then on Friday night, the boys traveled to Illini Central, but, because of the terrible weather and storms, the game got canceled midway through. The freshman boys team also had two home games this week in the middle school gym. Thursday night they lost 50-75 against Metamora. On Saturday was a win of 59-53 vs. Prairie Central.

Wrestling had a busy week, too, with three meets. Tuesday the team had an away match with East Peoria and the Illini Bluffs. Thursday was the first home meet for the wrestling team. This was the Annual Manahan Duals with U-High and Lincoln. Olympia won to U-High 69-12 and lost to Lincoln 41-37. Saturday was an all-day event at Richwoods High School in Peoria.

The boys’ swim team had their first meet on Thursday. This was at home versus Washington. The boys were excited to get the season finally rolling with a competition. Since the next meet is not until January, they have extra time to practice and continue to improve.
