OHS Weekly Sports Recap

The only activity that went on Monday night was a home JV football game vs St. Joseph Ogden. Again, all levels of the football team were heavily depleted by injury. Late in the 4th quarter, Olympia was able to take the lead 22-20, but then St. Joe quickly came up with a hook and ladder play to win 22-28. Even with this loss, the coaches were very proud of their football players for all their hard work.

Tuesday was packed full of sporting events for Olympia. Girls’ golf traveled to Pontiac for their last regular season meet. Both cross country teams raced at the El Paso-Gridley invitational and brought home trophies yet again. Abby Litwiller placed 4th out of 107 runners, helping the Lady Spartans obtain 3rd out of 13 teams. The guys gained 1st place with the top placings coming from Anthony Ragland, Carter Phillips, Owen Dare, Logan Demling, and Caden Clark. Freshmen, Cooper Phillips and Amilia Kistner, won the Gourd Awards for running an “out of your mind” type of run. For a second time this season, girls’ swimming went to Normal Community. Boys’ soccer brought home another win at Tolono Unity with a score of 4-1. Alex Yoder and Jace Whitted each scored 2 goals with assists coming from Elijah Smith, Elliott Hohulin, George Martin, and Matt Van Dyke. Varsity volleyball played one of their best games this season, defeating the new conference addition team Paxton-Buckley-Loda (previous record 14-3) in just two sets. This win may have come as a surprise, but Olympia earned it.

The next couple of days included the IHSA regional golf tournament for the boys and girls. The soccer team also competed in two more away games. Swimming then had a home meet vs. Pontiac and LaSalle Peru. Volleyball played at St. Thomas More, coming up with a strong JV win. Varsity then lost to STM competing against a team with three upcoming D1 college players.

It was an unusual Friday night set of football games at IVC with the freshmen team playing first and then varsity. The freshmen game was close the whole time, but Olympia fell short and lost 36-40. It then poured for the first half of the varsity game, making a muddy mess and a slippery football. This was a tough loss for the Spartans with a score 14-54 and IVC’s only season win. Now, all teams are looking forward to this upcoming Homecoming Week.
